He received geology degrees from Mesa College, Colorado State University, and the University of Utah. He recently retired after a 25-year career at Colorado Mesa University (previously Mesa State College) and is now an Emeritus Professor of Geology. He also has extensive experience working in industry, including oil-and-gas, uranium, oil shale, and mineral exploration. He has authored or co-authored numerous articles, book chapters, and field guidebooks dealing with the geology of western Colorado and eastern Utah, plus has given many presentations to professional organizations, academic institutions, and community groups. Dr. Cole\u2019s presentation will be based on a recently published (2022) general-audience book entitled the \u201cGeology of Grand Mesa, Colorado.&#8221;<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-d757e35 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"d757e35\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Topics covered:<\/p><ul><li>Size comparison of the Mesa to other mesas on the Earth. Is it actually the largest flat-topped mountain?<\/li><li>A summary of the geologic events that shaped western Colorado<\/li><li>Volcanism and genesis of the lava cap<\/li><li>Erosional transformation of the lava cap into today\u2019s towering landform<\/li><li>Glacial history during the Ice Ages<\/li><li>Present-day instability (landslides)<\/li><li>Water storage<\/li><\/ul>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-921d8e7 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"921d8e7\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tThe History Talk will begin at 6 p.m. on Thursday, October 8th at the Palisade Community Gym (711 Iowa Ave). This program is open to the public, and reservations are not required. Attendees are welcome to bring food and beverages to enjoy during the History Talk.
